What Is a Product Template?

A Product Template in Shopify controls the layout and sections used on a product page. Instead of using the same layout for all products, you can assign different templates to different products for more flexibility.

Step-by-Step: Creating a New Product Template

Step 1: Go to Theme Customization

• In your Shopify Admin, click on Online Store > Themes

• Click Customize next to your active theme

Step 2: Open the Product Template

• From the top dropdown, choose Products > Default product

• This loads your current product template for editing

Step 3: Duplicate the Template

1. In the top bar, click the ‘...’ (three dots) next to the name of the current template.

2. Select “Create template”

3. Give your new template a name — for example: digital-product or with-video

4. Click Create template

You’ve now created a new, independent layout for product pages.

Step 4: Customize the New Template

Now you're editing the new template. You can:

• Add or remove sections (like image banners, reviews, timers)

• Use app blocks or custom sections

• Reorder elements

• Change visibility of blocks based on screen size

Make sure to click Save when you're done.

Step 5: Assign the Template to a Product

Now let’s use this new template on a specific product.

1. Go to Products > All Products in your Shopify admin

2. Click on the product you want to customize

3. Scroll down to the Theme Template section (bottom right)

4. Choose your new template from the dropdown

5. Click Save

That product now uses the new template layout — without affecting others.
